Agbonlahor tips ex-teammate Siegrist to thrive at Rangers after transfer latest

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed his former teammate Benjamin Siegrist to thrive if he was to make the step up to Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England attacker claimed his former Aston Villa teammate was always “very determined”.

The Scottish Daily Mail reported earlier this month (10 January) Rangers and English Premier League club Southampton were plotting pre-contract moves for the Dundee United stopper.

He is out of contract at Tannadice at the end of the season and is, therefore, free to negotiate a pre-contract deal with cross-border clubs.

As relayed by footballscotland on Sunday (23 January), the 29-year-old revealed to the Swiss press he refused to rule out leaving Dundee United.

The former Switzerland youth international has been at the club for three-and-a-half years and has kept 47 clean sheets in 126 appearances across all competitions.

“I was at Aston Villa with him and yes, he was always a very good goalkeeper in the reserve team,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He always had the height and was a tall goalkeeper from the age of 16, 17. He was very determined, a very determined keeper who wanted to make it.

“Yes, I think he’s got the attributes and I don’t see why he can’t go to Rangers.”

Siegrist moved to Aston Villa from Swiss giants in the summer of 2019, just before his 17th birthday.

He failed to make a senior appearance for the Midlands giants and spent time on loan at Burton Albion, Cambridge United, Solihull Moors and Wycombe Wanderers.

In other news, Rangers have been tipped to spend ‘a lot of money’ on a January transfer after the latest update.
