Agbonlahor tips Newcastle United for Denzel Dumfries swoop with 'big shock' imminent

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Newcastle to complete a summer move for Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies need Champions League experience in order to avoid a “big shock” in the competition next season.

Sources told this site last week (7 May) that Newcastle are considering a summer bid for Inter defender Dumfries.

It is believed that Magpies boss Eddie Howe is eager to bring in more competition and depth on his right flank to challenge Kieran Trippier.

Dumfries, who is contracted at San Siro until June 2025, has notched 45 appearances across all competitions this season – including 10 games in the Champions League.

Third-place Newcastle will play in Europe’s premier club competition next season if they can hold off fifth-place Liverpool in the final games of the 2022-23 campaign.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’d be a very good signing.

“He’s not as good on the ball as Trippier, obviously, but he’s very athletic and probably a better defender than Trippier.

“When you’re playing in the Champions League, you know you need experience if you’re going to go far.

“They need players who have been in that competition before.

“It’s going to be a big shock for a lot of that Newcastle side next season.

“You’re playing against top-quality sides every week, and you need to be prepared by getting the right signings in.

“I’m sure they will do that – and I see Dumfries as someone who will fit into this project.

“He knows he’s going to earn a few bob as well.”
