Agbonlahor: Tottenham fans ‘won’t be happy’ with Benitez after telling Levy update

Rafael Benitez has been a “great manager” but Tottenham fans would not be happy with his style of football, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Aston Villa striker insisted the Spaniard would not be a good appointment for Spurs.

Football Insider revealed the London club are weighing up an approach for Benitez as they seek a top-level manager.

Tottenham want Jose Mourinho’s successor to have proven Premier League experience as well as big club pedigree.

Daniel Levy provided an update to supporters via the club’s website that stated they would appoint “someone whose values reflect those of our great club.”

He added: “We are acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and return to playing football with the style for which we are known – free-flowing, attacking and entertaining – whilst continuing to embrace our desire to see young players flourish from our academy alongside experienced talent.”

Asked whether Benitez would be a good appointment, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I’m not sure, you know.

“Rafa Benitez has been a great manager. But I see a team like Spurs, if they’re bringing in Rafa Benitez the fans won’t be happy. They’ll want somebody with a different style of football to that.

“I don’t think that would be a good appointment for Spurs.”

Benitez has been out of work since leaving Chinese club Dalian Professional in January after 18 months in charge.

The 61-year-old has won three European trophies in his career, including the Champions League with Liveprool.
