Agbonlahor verdict on Aston Villa potentially signing free agent after Purslow reveal
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Aston Villa will not sign a free agent goalkeeper despite Emiliano Martinez being unavailable for the game against Chelsea.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted Jed Steer will have the opportunity to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Martinez, as well as his Argentina teammate Emi Buendia, will miss the game as they complete 10 days of training in green-list Croatia.
If they returned to the UK straight from South America they would have had to spend 10 days quarantining in a hotel.
A Villa source has told Football Insider that owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris are “furious” with the situation and have questioned why Christian Purslow did not do more to stop the pair heading to Brazil for Agentina’s World Cup qualifier.
The game was subsequently suspended because of the presence of Martinez, Buendia and Tottenham duo Christian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso.

Asked whether the situation could see Villa dip into the free-agent market for a new goalkeeper, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think Villa will to be honest.
“You’ve got to look at it and Martinez’s injury record is very good.
“Jed Steer is an OK backup to come in for a few games. It’s up to Jed now to show what he can do in the next game.
“If there’s one team that you expect a lot of shots from it’s Chelsea.
“I hope he’s ready for the game. He will have known for the past couple of weeks that he will be playing so he’s had time to prepare.
“So, no, I don’t think Villa will bring in another keeper. I think they will be happy with what they’ve got there.”
