Gabriel Agbonlahor has called on Tyler Roberts to show more consistency if he is to earn a new Leeds United contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker delivered his verdict after the Wales international played a key role in Leeds’ 3-0 victory over Southampton on Tuesday night.
Roberts, 22, was handed his second consecutive start at Elland Road after playing the full 90 minutes of Leeds’ 1-0 defeat to Wolves last Friday night.
He provided the assist for Patrick Bamford’s opening goal against the Saints and ended the game with three shots, one key pass and a pass accuracy of 74 per cent, according to sofascore.
Ahead of the visit of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, Roberts’ manager Marcelo Bielsa called on Roberts to show “continuity” in his performances.
The Argentine added: “Depending on this we will see if he is able to consolidate himself as a Premier League player or not.”
Asked whether he thought Roberts had it in him to establish himself as a top-flight player, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He probably knows he is in the team through merit and he’s doing well. He has ability. But to keep his place in the team he’s got to keep it up.
“I’m sure Bielsa will reward him if he keeps performing for him. He’s just got to keep playing his game, keep trying to improve.
“Hopefully he can earn a new contract.”
Roberts has now played 14 times in the Premier League this season – but only four of this have been starts.
His assist on Tuesday night was his second of the campaign and his eighth for Leeds across all competitions.
