Ajer 'would jump at chance' to seal 'dream' Newcastle move after transfer mission - Phillips

Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer “would jump at the chance” to move to Newcastle United this summer.

That is according to 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about reported interest in the 23-year-old from the Tyneside giants.

The Scottish Sun claim the Magpies have stepped up their interest in the Hoops star and sent scouts to watch him at Ibrox on Sunday.

The centre-half, who plays alongside Erling Haaland with Norway, has been virtually ever-present for the Glasgow giants this season and has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season.

Ajer will enter the final 12 months of his contract at Parkhead next month and could therefore be available for a knockdown fee at the end of the campaign.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if he could see a move materialising, Phillips said: “I think Ajer would jump at the chance to join Newcastle.

“For any player, if you have the chance to play in the Premier League you normally take it.

“Newcastle are a massive club and it is a great place to play when the fans are behind you.

“If you have done well in Scotland, which he has, the next move is the Premier League. It is every player’s dream to play in the Premier League so if he got the opportunity I think he would jump at it, to be honest, even thought Celtic are a huge club in their own right.”
