Alan Hutton makes unexpected Connor Goldson claim after what ‘I heard’ at Rangers
Alan Hutton has claimed John Beaton was right not to award a penalty against Rangers defender Connor Goldson for his challenge on Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said Goldson’s challenge on Duk in the 1-0 win over Aberdeen on Sunday (7 May) was “definitely a foul” but wasn’t inside the penalty area.
The Light Blues’ centre-back appeared to wrestle the Dons attacker to the ground just outside of the penalty area.
Referee Beaton did not award and penalty and the decision of the onfield referee was not overturned.
Speaking after the game, Aberdeen manager Barry Robson questioned the decision not to penalise the defender and asked “where was VAR” after his side ended their unbeaten run with the defeat at Ibrox.
When asked if the incident should have been a penalty, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think it starts outside the box.
“It is a long punt up the field, Duk does really well and Goldson pulls him back. John Beaton is miles away from it but the linesman is right up with the play so if it is a foul he normally flags.
“I heard people were getting annoyed that VAR did not look at it but I think it is because the ref does not actually give anything.

“He does not give a foul, he gives the corner and so there is no need for VAR to intervene.
“It is definitely a foul but it starts outside the box.“
