Alan Hutton shares emphatic verdict on jeering Rangers fans – ‘Let’s not kid ourselves’

Rangers fans are “well within their right” to voice concerns from the terraces of Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claimed it is “important” for the fanbase to communicate their feelings to players and managers whether it be positive or negative.

Discontent from the crowds has reduced since Michael Beale’s exit and the upturn in form under Philippe Clement, but last month’s (30 November) Europa League clash against Aris Limassol saw jeers and boos during a stagnant first half.

Clement remained diplomatic regarding the booing after the 1-1 tie, noting that “Rome isn’t built in a day”.

Hutton has no qualms with the Ibrox faithful’s methods and claims they are selective of when they chose to boo.

“They’re well within their right if they’re not happy with what they’re seeing,” he told Football Insider.

“They pay their money to watch them so they can voice their opinion – it’s as simple as that.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, they’re some of the best fans that I’ve ever played in front of in terms of when you’re doing well – they’ll back you.

“If you are doing badly on the pitch, they will get behind you too, it’s important.

“I think they boo at the right times, so at halftime and fulltime, that’s when they do it.

“It means the players know that that 45 minutes wasn’t good enough or that 90 minutes wasn’t good enough, you need to give more.

“So I think they do back the team, but they will let their feeling be known and I think that’s perfectly fine.”
