Alan Pardew has revealed he heard how “impressive” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was during the Argentine’s time at Southampton.
The former Espanyol coach has been a key man for Spurs since he arrived at White Hart Lane from St Mary’s in 2014.
Prior to joining the north London club, he had helped Southampton to Europe where he won admirers for his style of play and bringing through youngsters such as Luke Shaw.
He has since brought those qualities to Tottenham, helping them challenge for the title for two consecutive seasons.
Speaking to Monday Night Football, which aired on Sky Sports 1 (1 May), Pardew revealed what he heard about Pochettino from Spurs’ Premier League rivals.
“For me, I was ex-Southampton manager, he come to Southampton and I had some players there and some staff there, I started hearing noises about how impressive he was on the training ground and how he was with the players,” Pardew told the Sky Sports 1 programme.
Last season, Spurs produced their best finish in England’s top flight in over two decades when they secured third place in the Premier League table.
For the majority of that campaign, they were challenging eventual winners Leicester City for the title before they collapsed at the final hurdle.
At this moment in time, Pochettino’s team are four points behind leaders Chelsea in the table, with four matches of the season remaining.
The likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Danny Rose and summer signing Victor Wanyama have impressed this term.
Pochettino has once again proven that he can get the best out of his squad, playing attractive football which has been mixed with youth and experience.
