Shearer delivers verdict on Lukaku, shares how Everton ace must improve

By Amir Mir

Alan Shearer has stated that Everton ace Romelu Lukaku needs to start scoring against the top six sides in order to take his game to the “next level”.

The 23-year-old striker scored four goals for the Toffees at the weekend as they were involved in a pulsating 6-3 win against Bournemouth.

Lukaku has been in great form for Ronald Koeman’s side this term as the Dutchman searches for European football with his new team.

Belgian international Lukaku has scored a total of 17 goals in all competitions this season as he looks certain to break the 20 goal barrier.

Former Premier League winner Shearer hailed the highly-rated forward for his performance but offered this piece of advice.

“The one thing that I think would take him to the next level is this; in the last three years, 30 times he’s played against top six opposition, but only three goals,” Shearer told Match of the Day, as quoted by click Liverpool.

“He’s been in a struggling team at times, but if he can keep on improving then I think he can get there.”

In the Premier League, Lukaku has scored 16 goals in 23 games, including providing four assists for his team.

Out of the current top six teams, he has scored two goals against them, both coming against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Other than that, he failed to score against Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, as he will be looking to make his mark during the reverse matches against those sides.

Nonetheless, his goals have seen his team maintain a top seven spot in the league as Koeman’s side are on 40 points from 24 games, five points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

Their next league match is against north east outfit Middlesbrough as the Toffees will travel to the Riverside Stadium.
