Alan Shearer has revealed he is “surprised” after hearing that not only has Jonjo Shelvey been ignored by Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s upcoming friendly against Holland, but Jamaal Lascelles too.
Writing on his official Twitter, the England legend delivered his verdict on the duo making his feelings known to the masses on social media. He wrote: ‘Having looked at this squad I’m VERY surprised @Lascelles16 and Shelvey haven’t made it.’

The Match of the Day pundit was most likely suggesting that the inclusion of Jake Livermore over the Magpies midfielder was questionable considering Shelvey’s form this season.
Football Insider verdict:
Shearer has a point regarding the omission of Shelvey while Livermore earns a call-up. The 26-year-old is in the midst of one of his best seasons and despite the club’s lowly league position, his passing and commitment (for the most part) have been key to Rafa Benitez’ side’s form of late, losing just once in the last five games. The West Brom midfielder meanwhile has been part of a dismal Baggies team who are in the depths of a relegation battle and look nailed on for the Championship. The fact remains that Shelvey is a better player all round and can offer a lot more in the way of attacking ability than the WBA man – but that clearly isn’t what Gareth Southgate sees.
