Alan Shearer was full of praise for Huddersfield midfielder Philip Billing on Wednesday night, who has been tracked by Tottenham in recent seasons, according to a report.
The 20-year-old delivered an eye catching performance for Championship side Huddersfield in the FA Cup fifth-round, despite a 5-1 away loss against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Daily Mail claim that Billing has been watched by a number of Premier League clubs in the past two years.
The report details that Spurs have shown a particularly “strong interest” in signing the highly rated youngster.
Shearer was blown away by the powerful performance of Billing against Premier League opposition Man City and thought he stepped up superbly.
“He’s been brilliant,” Shearer told BBC One’s programme coverage. “It’s one thing playing at the level he plays at but to come on this stage now live on television and play the way he is, against the players he played against, he’s been superb.”
Huddersfield may have exited the tournament in the fifth-round with a heavy defeat, but they will now focus on their bid to secure automatic promotion from the Championship.
Billing has been a regular feature in David Wagner’s side this season since he returned from injury and is playing a role in their strong league form.
The Dane has made 17 appearances across all competitions this campaign and chipped in with two goals.
The powerhouse midfielder showed his intelligence against Man City with a number of tackles and interceptions, plus demonstrated his ability in possession.
Spurs have shown the desire to introduce youngsters into the first-team under Mauricio Pochettino and the north London club will be aware of his fantastic performance in the FA Cup.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club only paid £9million for one of their summer signings.
