Alan Shearer: What a bonkers game of football

Barnes has struggled for game time this season for Newcastle, but showed Howe exactly why he should be starting week in, week out on Wednesday with an exceptional display.

The attacker netted in the first half before he caused chaos at St James’ Park with a goal in the 102nd minute.

While Leeds will claim that the Magpies did not deserve the three points, Newcastle supporters and Howe will care little as they strengthen their position in the Premier League table.

The goal could prove to be fundamental if Newcastle plan to qualify for the Champions League next season, and now Shearer has taken to X on 7 January to react to the late drama at St James’ Park.

He put: “Wowwwwwww!!!!!! What a bonkers game of football. Harveyyyyyyyy,” followed by white and black heart emojis.

What did Harvey Barnes say about his winner for Newcastle?

Barnes’ late winner will live long in the memory of Newcastle supporters.

It was an excellent finish, and it could now prove to be the catalyst in making the attacker a key starter under Howe.

The winger has only started in nine Premier League matches this season, with three of these coming in Newcastle’s last three games.

Now, with each one of these ending in a Magpies win, the England international is clearly having a big impact on the team when he starting on the pitch.

Speaking to Sky Sports on 7 January after the game, Barnes admitted that his winner was “special”.

He said: “I don’t really remember it. It’s a swivel, hit and hope and celebrate. It’s a bit of blur.

“When you’re in the box, it’s instinct to get whatever contact you can, and there’s that many bodies, anything can happen.

“Everyone knows what the atmosphere is like up here, but when a last-minute winner goes in like that, it’s special.”
