Alan Shearer responds instantly as Newcastle-Jhon Duran news breaks live on air
Jhon Duran should not be surprised the appeal against his red card for Aston Villa in their defeat to Newcastle was unsuccessful, Alan Shearer has said.
The striker was shown a straight red card by referee Anthony Taylor in his side’s 3-0 loss at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.
With 32 minutes on the clock, the Colombia international found himself competing for a high ball with Magpies defender Fabian Schar.
As the Sweden international went to ground, the Aston Villa appeared to accidentally step on his opponent in a movement he was unable to avoid given where he had landed.
He was still shown a straight red card by Taylor which was not overturned by VAR, and it has now been confirmed an appeal to overturn the decision has failed, meaning he will serve a three-game ban.
Although Shearer admits the sending off was not correct, he also believes it was unlikely the appeal would ever be successful in the circumstances.
Giving his reaction to that failed appeal as the news broke while on co-commentary on Amazon Prime‘s coverage of Arsenal vs Ipswich on Friday (27 December), the former Newcastle striker said (9:38pm):
“Yeah I’m not surprised, once the VAR became involved and the referee thought it was a red card. I thought it was harsh at the time and I’ve not changed my mind, but I’m not surprised.”
Jhon Duran and Aston Villa can feel hard done by over red card call at Newcastle
Football Insider Opinion
Even after both the referee and VAR had checked the decision during the match, it still feels remarkably harsh for Duran to be banned due to this incident.
It certainly does not look as though the Aston Villa man intentionally stamped on Schar, and instead there was no way he could stop himself from landing on the Newcastle man after the way he feel.
The striker therefore did very little wrong in the passage of play that led to him being sent off against the Magpies.
With that in mind sending him off did not seem the right decision at the time, and the fact two sets of officials thought that should not have changed things when it came to the appeal.

Not only was it a blow for Aston Villa in terms of that defeat to Newcastle, but also for the games he will now miss considering the excellent form Duran has been in this season.
As a result it is hard to imagine there will not be anyone around Villa Park who will not be extremely disappointed by this news the appeal against the sending off has been dismissed.
In Ollie Watkins though, they do at least have another striker who will be desperate to step into the breach and re-establish himself as first-choice for Unai Emery’s side.
In other news, Aston Villa could be set for a multi-million pound windfall.
