Alderweireld puts the frighteners on Tottenham
By Harry Sykes
Toby Alderweireld has admitted his Tottenham future is firmly up in the air after contract talks failed to secure an agreement over an extension.
The Belgium international issued a stark “we will see what happens” response when asked for an update on negotiations over a new deal while also claiming much has gone on behind the scenes this summer.
Moreover, his agent Stijn Francis, who advises Alderweireld along with his father Vic,has urged Tottenham to sell their star defender if they are not willing to offer him the contract he deserves.
Francis insisted that Alderweireld is wanted by eight top clubs across the globe as a result of his outstanding form since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2015 from Atletico Madrid.
It has been widely reported that talks over a new contract have hit a stalemate and there is no sign of an agreement for one of Spurs’ key players.

Questioned on his future, Alderweireld said, as quoted by the Sun: “I leave everything to my father. We will see what happens in the coming months. But of course a great deal has happened recently.
“I am going to progress still further. I can really see myself getting a whole lot better.
“By adapting my game, I have improved every season.”
Alderweireld is said to be holding out for a massive upgrade on his current £50,000-a-week contract, which has two more years remaining plus an option for a further 12 months.
He is a firm favourite of Spurs supporters as a result of the consistent excellence of his performances, which have prompted many to hail him as the club’s outstanding defender of the last 40 years.
“When you look at Toby’s statistics, they are impressive,” Francis said, “Either he deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.
“Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him.
“There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can.
“But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”
The stance of Alderweireld and his agent will concern Spurs and their fans, given his significance to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
