Alderweireld identifies what Tottenham must have to compete at the top
By Harvey Byrne
Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld believes the teams at the top must have a good defence to build from.
The 27-year-old defender made the switch to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015 for an £11.5million fee from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
He has so far proved a solid addition to the north London club and has helped solidify an already impressive back four alongside Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker.
Tottenham currently have the best defensive record in the top flight and the Belgium international believes it is essential for the successful sides.
“Every team at the top must have a good defence and you build from that,” told Alderweireld to the Evening Standard.

“Everyone is working hard – and that includes players like Harry Kane, who is also scoring goals for us.
“The team know how important it is to be compact and keep clean sheets and that is a very strong thing for us.”
Alderweireld has starred in 66 encounters in all competitions since making his move to north London.
He was crucial to helping Tottenham finish in a successful third place finish in the last league campaign, while he has helped the club occupy second after 21 matches this season.
With seven points currently separating the north London club from league leaders Chelsea he will now be keen to ensure Mauricio Pochettino’s side stake a claim for their first Premier League title.
Spurs’ next challenge will come in the form of fifth placed Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday, who suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park in their last league encounter.
