'Very impressive' - Exclusive: Bruce reacts to big Newcastle player update

Alex Bruce insists that Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo is well-deserving of his new long-term contract at St James’ Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the son of Newcastle boss Steve admitted he had been very impressed by the Spaniard’s recent performances.

The Magpies confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the 26-year-old had put pen to paper on a new four-year deal at St James’ Park, with his old contract set to expire this summer.

The right-back has been in and out of the starting XI for Steve Bruce this summer but has played the full 90 minutes in both games since the restart of the Premier League.

Alex insists that Manquillo has proven himself a reliable performer for his dad and that he has earned his new deal on Tyneside.

Bruce told Football Insider: “He’s been rewarded with a good contract, he’s played well, he’s been very impressive in the last couple of games.

“He’s a steady eddy so long may that continue. You’ve seen with Manquillo in the last couple of games he’s played very well.”

Manquillo has played a total of 61 times for Newcastle since signing from Atletico Madrid back in 2017, although only 17 of those appearances have come this season.

He has had to battle it out with USA international DeAndre Yedlin, as well as January signing Valentino Lazaro, for a place in the starting XI.
