58-year-old responds when asked about Rangers role

Currently unemployed boss Alex McLeish has suggested that he would accept a call from the Rangers hierarchy if asked to take over the vacant role.

Former manager Mark Warburton lost his job in charge of the Ibrox giants on Friday evening when it was announced that the club had accepted his resignation.

Graeme Murty took over temporary charge of the side on Sunday in their 2-1 win over Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup and it is believed Rangers are now looking for someone more experienced to take over the reigns.

Glasgow-born McLeish, 58, just so happened to be in the Sky Sports studio for the match and he was very much like a politician when asked about the role, but he did not rule out taking over.

“There’s obviously a lot of speculation at the moment,” started McLeish speaking on Sky Sports 2 after the match.

“According to pundits and newspapers I’m one of the favourites to get the job, but I need to get a call from Rangers first. I’m sure they’ll be deliberating over other candidates as well.”

He was then asked whether he wanted the job, to which McLeish answered rather diplomatically: “I have to get the call first.”

McLeish has enjoyed a long career in management with his first senior job coming in the form of Scottish Premiership side Motherwell in 1994.

He has gone on to manage eight different sides, making it nine in total, which includes Scotland, Birmingham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

He also spent five years in charge of Rangers between 2001 and 2006, winning the Premiership twice alongside two Scottish Cups and three League Cup trophies.

It is thought that Rangers fans would welcome him back to the club, but Derek McInnes, Billy Davies and Frank de Boer are also being linked with the role.
