Alex McLeish tells Rangers to copy Celtic ‘wonder show’ as transfer blizzard predicted

Rangers must emulate Celtic’s transfer market “wonder show” this summer or face being “left behind”, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the contract situation at Ibrox means “a new cycle” is well underway in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad.

Steven Davis, Leon Balogun, Connor Goldson, and Allan McGregor are among the Rangers stars set to walk away from the club when their contracts expire on Tuesday (31 May).

Meanwhile, the Ibrox club face a decision on the futures of key men like Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent, and Alfredo Morelos – who all have just one year on their deals and can negotiate pre-contract agreements in six months’ time.

Celtic wrestled the title back from Rangers’ grasp this season after manager Ange Postecoglou made no fewer than 17 signings across both windows.

McLeish insisted the Gers must seek to emulate that success this summer if Van Bronckhorst’s side are to put up a fight next term.

“The recruitment has to be really good,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“As we saw with Celtic last summer, the end result was an absolute wonder show. Almost every signing came good, even if the initial impressions weren’t great.

“That’s the type of recruitment Giovanni has to undertake now. There’s a new cycle beginning at Rangers. There are a lot of players coming to the end of their contracts.

“He’s got to go out and find a lot of players capable of hitting the ground running.

Rangers

Just as these unknown Celtic players did last season.

“You have to keep improving, you can’t sit still – or they could be left behind.”
