Alexander Isak behind-scenes Newcastle image emerges ahead of Liverpool final

Newcastle United fans have been given an update on the situation around top scorer Alexander Isak ahead of their Carabao Cup final with Liverpool, via Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

The Magpies will be looking to end their long wait for a major trophy when they take on the Premier League leaders at Wembley on 16 March.

However they have had plenty of issues to worry about in the lead-up to that game already, not least the fitness of their top scorer.

Football Insider recently revealed that Liverpool were considering offering Darwin Nunez to Newcastle in a swap deal for Isak.

Last week, the two sides then faced each other in the Premier League at Anfield, with Isak “mysteriously” absent as Newcastle were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool.

The Sweden international returned and scored for Eddie Howe‘s side in their FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday (2 March) only to limp off late on in that game.

Alexander Isak news emerges as Carabao Cup final nears

Following his premature departure from that match with Brighton, many Magpies supporters have been left speculating whether Isak will be fit to play in the final against Liverpool.

Now however, Sky Sports journalist Downie has moved to play down some of those concerns around the Newcastle talisman, suggesting he is currently in a good position.

Taking to X on Wednesday (5 March) to provide an update on the striker in the wake of some of that speculation, Downie wrote:

“I was at the NUFC training ground today for Carabao Cup Final media access day, and Alexander Isak was conducting interviews, moving well and in good spirits ahead of the upcoming games. Don’t let the rumours get out of control…”

The reporter then also attached of Isak in full Newcastle kit at the training ground, seemingly taking a photo for media purposes ahead of the final.

Newcastle United fans will welcome fresh striker update

There are already several concerns for the Magpies ahead of the final with Anthony Gordon set to be suspended after his red card against Brighton.

Left-back Lewis Hall will also miss the final through injury in another major blow for Newcastle ahead of a key game in the club’s history.

If Isak, by far their standout player this season, was also set to be absent for that game, the mood around the club would only plummet even further.

This though appears to suggest that he could still be set to feature against Liverpool at Wembley, which will offer some hope to those connected with the club ahead of that game.

Prior to the final, Newcastle are due to travel to West Ham on Monday (10 March) in the Premier League as they continue to chase a European place this season.

Given what is therefore at stake in both of those games, it will be interesting to see if Howe risks Isak at the London Stadium just a few days before taking on Liverpool in that final.
