Alexander Isak could be frozen out at Newcastle United amid confirmed news - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Alexander Isak may have to “bide his time” before returning to the Newcastle United starting lineup after the World Cup.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 23-year-old will provide “healthy competition” for red-hot stars Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron over the festive period.

As quoted by the Shields Gazette (11 November), Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that he hopes Isak will be fit to play in December friendlies against Al-Hilal and Rayo Vallecano after his latest scan returned positive results.

The striker scored twice in his first two Magpies games but has missed the last eight fixtures with a hamstring injury.

Since then, Almiron has claimed the Premier League’s Player of the Month Award for October after scoring seven goals in the last seven games.

Wilson has also hit form, scoring three in his last three top-flight games to propel Newcastle into third and claim a spot in England’s World Cup squad.

When asked if Isak may have to wait before claiming a starting berth on his return, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely – but he’ll understand that.

“I think as a new player, if you’re winning football matches – then you’re still happy.

“He won’t be happy to be sitting on the bench but his time will come and in the meantime, Newcastle are doing really well.

“It’s better coming back from injury to come back into a successful side than to come back to a side who are struggling.

“He’ll be aware and quite happy to bide his time, get fit, and then provide healthy competition for the likes of Almiron and Wilson over the festive period.”
