Alfredo Morelos: Expert amazed by ‘incredible’ Rangers star after ‘surprising’ reveal

Noel Whelan has insisted Alfredo Morelos’ record of scoring in Europe for Rangers has been “pretty incredible”.

The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old’s 28 goals in European competitions would make people realise “what a potent goalscorer he is”.

Morelos scored Rangers’ second en route to a sensational 4-2 win away at Borussia Dortmund on Thursday.

He also contributed the assist for Dan-Axel Zagadou’s own goal.

Morelos overtook Ally McCoist’s European goals record for Rangers back in November.

Whelan suggested the Colombian’s form on the continent would surprise many fans.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think when you say that, it makes you stand back a little bit and realise what a potent goalscorer he is. It’s one thing scoring 28 goals in the Scottish Premiership.

“But to score 28 goals in Europe, against some of the elite teams, that’s pretty incredible and a great feat to have achieved.

“As an individual, as a player, as a goalscorer, that’s not easy. The hardest thing in football is putting the ball in the back of the net. He does it with ease when he’s in the Scottish Premiership and you would expect that.

“But in Europe, wow, that’s quite an accolade to hold. I think this is going to be a surprising stat to many people.

“It just goes to show that he can score at any level. We know he’s a goalscorer, we know he can finish, that’s never been in question. The only thing was sometimes his application and his attitude.

“That will never been taken away from him, 28 goals in Europe. I’m sure he’s going to hit 30 and that’s something a lot of players have not achieved.”

Rangers

Morelos has scored four goals in eight European games this season.

However, two of those came in the 2-0 group stages win over Sparta Prague.
