Alisson posts immediate Liverpool reaction, he couldn’t believe teammate’s performance

Liverpool continued their flawless start to the season with a victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

The Reds took the lead in the first half as Alexander Isak scored his first Liverpool goal, with the Swedish international making his second start for the club.

Southampton then equalised proceedings in the second period through Shea Charles’ 76th-minute strike before substitute Hugo Ekitike grabbed a late winner to send Arne Slot’s men into the fourth round.

Although Ekitike was sent off for a second yellow card after removing his shirt, the night will also be remembered for another reason.

Alisson wowed by Federico Chiesa’s performance vs Southampton

Federico Chiesa has struggled since joining Liverpool last summer, seeing most of his opportunities restricted to substitute appearances.

There has even been talk of Chiesa potentially leaving Liverpool, with sources telling Football Insider that he’s currently ‘unhappy’ at Anfield.

Supporters felt that Chiesa had to impress against Southampton, and fortunately, the Italian was breathtaking at times.

The 27-year-old showed his remarkable qualities with two assists on the night, the first for Isak’s goal and the second for Ekitike.

Watching on from home was goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who was rested by Slot in place of Giorgi Mamardashvili between the sticks and the Brazilian was impressed by his performance.

He wrote on his Instagram story during the game: “Well done lads, accompanied by the love heart and strength emoji, while also writing: “What a player @fedexchiesa”.

Clearly, his teammates know what talent the Italian possesses, and hopefully he can show it regularly after tonight.

Chiesa will get plenty more chances to impress

Liverpool’s victory over the Saints isn’t the first time Chiesa has impressed this season, scoring in the opening day win over Bournemouth.

The winger may have only played 47 minutes of Premier League football this term, but he’s always looked lively and that bodes well for Slot.

During a long and arduous season, he will need to use the full depth of his squad, especially with players picking up injuries.

And Chiesa is someone who can benefit from Slot rotating his team across various competitions, becoming a player he can rely on.
