‘All of a sudden’ – Matt Le Tissier drops Enzo Maresca sack verdict after Chelsea latest

Enzo Maresca is only a few bad results away from being sacked as Chelsea boss despite a decent start to the 2025-26 campaign.

That is according to Premier League icon Matt Le Tissier, who has told Football Insider that he believes the Italian manager is not under immediate pressure, but things can change quickly in football.

Enzo Maresca was hired as Chelsea boss in June 2024 after leading Leicester City to the Championship title in his first full-time job in the English game.

He led the club to a fourth-placed finish last season as they qualified for the Champions League, while they also won the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup.

Despite his success, doubts crept in at Chelsea in the early stages of this season over his position as manager, while other clubs are also known to be alert to his potential upcoming availability.

Enzo Maresca has been under pressure but Chelsea are now in good form

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider last month that Maresca was under pressure from the Chelsea board after his side won just one of five games between 13 and 27 September.

That sole win came against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup, but a 3-1 loss to Brighton on that latter date looks to have kickstarted their campaign into life.

The Blues have won all of their last four games, with Ajax the latest team to lose against Maresca’s side after a 5-1 Champions League drubbing at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, 22 October.

Football Insider recently revealed that Juventus are keeping tabs on Maresca, after he played for the club between 2000 and 2004, and so he could even walk away from Chelsea soon rather than be relieved of his duties.

Le Tissier backs Maresca but insists he must be wary of drop-off in form leading to sack

Chelsea take on Sunderland this weekend in another Premier League clash as they aim to jump into the top four with a win at the expense of the likes of Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker Le Tissier backed Maresca to keep his job short-term amid some good form, but admitted that the sack may not be far away if they go through another bad patch.

He said: “They’re (Chelsea) sitting in fifth place at the moment. They’re only five points off the top of the table, you know, so they’re still in contention for playing for the league title. I’d be surprised if there was much pressure on him (Maresca) right now.

“Obviously, things change very quickly. He loses three games in a row and all of a sudden, you know, he could find himself mid-table and then really under pressure. So he’s just got to keep picking up results.

“Winning the trophy in the summer should have bought him a little bit more time. But as we know, that’s not always the case, as we saw with Ange (Postecoglou), who won a trophy and was sacked, which I still find bizarre, even given where Spurs finished in the league.

I think he’s in the clear for the time being, but as we know with football, you’re only kind of three or four results away from being under pressure.
