Allan McGregor ‘hurting’ at Rangers as Giovanni van Bronckhorst reveals ‘difficult’ decision – expert

Alan Hutton is adamant Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor still wants to be number one.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gers defender said McGregor, 40, will be “working hard” to prove himself to Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

On 1 June, Rangers confirmed the former Scotland international has signed a one-year contract extension at Ibrox.

McGregor was named on the bench for the Bears’ opening three games of the season, including their 2-0 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Instead it was Jon McLaughlin, who played predominantly in the Glasgow club’s cup fixtures last season, between the sticks.

As quoted by Football Scotland (30 July), Van Bronckhorst admitted it has been “difficult to choose” between McLaughlin and McGregor this season.

When asked if McGregor has likely accepted the role of back-up goalkeeper this season, Hutton told Football Insider: “I don’t think so, he’s a born winner.

He wants to play week in, week out. Age is just a number to him. He’s 40 years of age, he’s still signed a contract so he believes that he can play.

He’ll be hurt at this moment in time because probably in the back of his mind he would have thought he would have been number one. It’s not worked out that way.

The one thing I do know about him is he’s very professional in what he does. He’ll be training hard he’ll be working hard to prove to the manager that he’s ready when called upon.
