Alli among six Tottenham stars who 'need to go' as Conte plots top-level overhaul - pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Antonio Conte to carry out a complete overhaul of the recruitment system at Tottenham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there are as many as six senior players at Spurs, many signed in recent windows, who should be offloaded next month.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (2 December), Conte wants to take full control of the recruitment process in January, alongside Fabio Paratici.

A Spurs source told this site Conte has been very critical behind the scenes over signings made in recent years.

Whelan insisted the manager needs to be given control in order to “rebuild” Spurs and make them competitive once again.

“I think a lot of us will probably back him up on about signings and players that they’ve brought in,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Different managers buying their players, that is the problem.

“Because they’ve had different managers over a very short space of time and they’ve all gone into the window and brought in their own players, there’s a lack of continuity there building a team.

“It’s built up with two, three different managers there. There are loads of people that need to be out of that club. There’s no doubt about that.

“I don’t think Lo Celso hit the heights when Eriksen left. I don’t think he’s really taken over that place. They’re still lacking that creative midfield player so he’s obviously not the one for it.

“Ndombele, you’ve got Doherty, then you’ve got Dele Alli. You could go through the team there and probably pull out about five or six that are on the chopping block.

“Then he can start rebuilding and getting players in that he feels are going to be competitive. You can then challenge the likes of Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Man United again.

“It’s back to the drawing board, I think, when it comes to Conte, transfers and the players he has at the club.”

Spurs signed Cristian Romero, Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal, Pierluigi Gollini and Pape Sarr this summer.

Of those, only Royal has been a regular under Conte, with Romero currently out with a long-term injury.

In other news, Tottenham are “expected” to “sign off” on eight transfers by “1 January”.
