Ally McCoist makes Danny Ings to Wrexham claim as stunning deal beckons

Ally McCoist has weighed in on interest in a free transfer swoop for former West Ham United striker Danny Ings from Wrexham.

Ings has left the Hammers after his contract with the London Stadium club expired following the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Meanwhile, after winning their third successive promotion, Wrexham must strengthen their squad ahead of competing in the Championship next term.

The Red Dragons have already signed forward Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle, but Ings would hand boss Phil Parkinson another attacking option to choose from.

McCoist outlines Ings as ‘certain’ Wrexham goal-scorer

The Red Dragons have done incredibly well to secure back-to-back promotions from the National League to the Championship.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, football finance expert Dan Plumley dismissed claims that Wrexham are worth £350million.

But as Parkinson looks to use his budget to strengthen his squad, the North Wales outfit have eyed a move for Ings, according to talkSPORT [26 June].

Meanwhile, discussing the former England international’s future live on talkSPORT [1 July], McCoist said: “I’m having it all day. All day, that’s all right for me.

Danny Ings will score goals certainly in the Championship.”

Football Insider verdict

Parkinson’s Wrexham have established themselves as an unrelenting promotion-winning machine in recent seasons, and took incredibly well to life in League One last term, just two seasons on from competing in the National League.

However, the Championship is a different beast, and the Red Dragons will once again have to work wonders to trouble the upper echelons of the second tier.

The fact that fellow newly-promoted side Birmingham City boast similarly lofty ambitions under the ownership of Knighthead Capital Management is undoubtedly a hindrance to the Racecourse Ground club.

But the potential arrival of Ings would help Wrexham bridge the gap between League One and the Championship, even though he struggled for former club West Ham.

The 32-year-old previously showcased his ability to score goals in the Premier League during his time with both Southampton and Burnley, albeit particularly for the Saints.

As alluded to by McCoist, dropping to the Championship could see Ings return to his attacking best.
