Ally McCoist reacts to Aaron Ramsdale to Man United transfer links

Ally McCoist gave his verdict on Manchester United’s goalkeeping options after they were linked with a move for Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale looks certain to leave St Mary’s this summer with Southampton’s relegation back to the Championship already confirmed and a £25million release clause in his contract set to be activated.

A number of Premier League clubs and other hopefuls, such as Man United’s rivals Leeds, want to sign the England goalkeeper, with Football Insider revealing that he’s keen on remaining in the top flight.

At Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim is experiencing a goalkeeping crisis of his own with Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir failing to impress, with the latter making several blunders in their 4-1 loss at Newcastle.

Andre Onana debate sparks Aaron Ramsdale transfer question

With United fans at the end of their collective tethers regarding the error-strewn Onana’s displays this season, there’ll be little surprise if Amorim isn’t shopping around for a new number one in the summer.

Football Insider revealed that Onana could be one of eight Man United players shunted towards the exit door at Old Trafford this summer, and it remains to be seen where Amorim will turn for a new goalkeeper.

Speaking on talkSPORT (15 April, 8:36am), Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist debated the prospect of United swooping for Ramsdale, with triggering his £25million release clause well within their financial capabilities.

“I don’t think it’d be daft at all,” said McCoist. “I don’t fancy Onana to be honest with you, I’m not sure he’s of the class Manchester United need as a goalkeeper moving forward.

“The squad’s needing a dramatic overhaul and that wouldn’t be the daftest move.”

Stelling added: “Ramsdale’s played at the top level. He’s played for England, he’s played for Arsenal, and he’s not going to want to play in the Championship with Southampton.”

“No, that’s for sure,” McCoist replied. “I’d be staggered if he starts next year at Southampton. I don’t think he’ll be there next season in the Championship.”

Man United set for seismic summer transfer window

While United’s former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Amorim is under “serious pressure” at Old Trafford after a dismal start to his tenure, he’s still set to lead their transfer policy.

Having already bombed out Marcus Rashford, Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Amorim sees no way back for the on-loan Aston Villa forward, whose spell at Villa Park will likely become permanent.

As well as a goalkeeper – be that Ramsdale or any other target – United’s other major priority will be to sign a striker this summer, and with Rasmus Hojlund also likely to be on the way out, it remains to be seen how Amorim will reshape his underperforming squad.
