Alex McLeish has hailed Shane Duffy as an “amazing” Celtic signing after he marked his debut with a goal in the 5-0 hammering of Ross County.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former treble-winning Rangers manager revealed how the on-loan Brighton defender is a gamechanging capture.
Celtic announced at the start of this month they had finalised a deal for Duffy to become their fourth senior summer arrival.
The Hoops held extensive talks with Brighton over the structure of a deal before the Premier League club finally accepted a £2.5million loan bid to take the centre-back for the season.
Duffy made his debut in a three-man defence alongside Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien in Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing of Ross County.
He scored the Hoops’ third goal when he met a corner with a trademark thumping header.
“The criticism I’ve seen was certainly in central defence, it looks like they’ve solved that one with Duffy,” McLeish told Football Insider. “It’s not easy to say where they have got great weaknesses.
“They’re still the team that people have to beat and they’ve entitled themselves to get
that sort of billing.
“They’re trying to get another title which would be very special to them which therefore will make them dig their heels in all the harder to keep their best players.
“Central defence was probably a priority for Neil and, for me, he’s solved that one.
“Duffy’s only 28, I was surprised when I saw that, I thought Shane was in his 30s but he’s kind of at his peak of his career and it’s an amazing piece of business.”
