'Amazing' West Ham saluted amid 'brilliant' Ogbonna development - pundit

Alex McLeish has hailed West Ham as they reportedly gear up to extend Angelo Ogbonna’s contract.

The former Aston Villa manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the club are doing the right thing.

On 9 November, West Ham confirmed Ogbonna, 33, picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his side’s win over Liverpool.

The club did not provide a timescale for the defender’s return but insisted his recovery was already underway.

The Atheltic reported on 9 November that the Hammers have the option to extend Ogbonna’s contract by a year.

It was claimed the club will take up this option and McLeish hailed the club for their “brilliant gesture”.

“An ACL injury is never good news,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Losing Ogbonna will upset that rhythm West Ham have. Though I know they have good players ready to step in.

“It will upset their flow and what they have been doing at the back.

The good thing about ACL injuries is, these days, they can be repaired to almost perfection.

“The good news is that he’s going to be given a new deal, that’s a brilliant gesture by the club.

“That’s amazing but you would expect them to do that, it’s the right thing to do.

West Ham moved up to third in the Premier League with a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

They are next in action against Wolves after the international break.
