‘Andre Onana exit update as Man United eye Aston Villa star Emi Martinez’

Man United targeting a move for Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez has called directly into question the future of Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old has come under considerable pressure since arriving from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, with Man United fans already giving up on Onana as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Despite keeping nine clean sheets during a torrid Premier League campaign, one of the worst in the Red Devils’ history, his mistakes leading to goals have won him no fans from the frustrated supporters.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United would be willing to accept a £50million bid from Saudi Arabia this summer, and Ruben Amorim may need that to happen after the latest breaking news.

Man United to replace Andre Onana this summer

According to talkSPORT (20 May), the Red Devils are joined by Atletico Madrid in the race for Martinez’s signature this summer, with the goalkeeper understood to want to remain in Europe rather than move to the Middle East.

This, however, could come at a cost to Onana, as any move for the 32-year-old would be reliant on United offloading their current shot-stopper for a fee, with the club prioritising signings in other positions with their current budget.

Martinez, who appeared to wave goodbye at Villa Park on Friday, 16 May, has a £40million price tag on his head, given his current deal runs until the summer of 2029.

Ruben Amorim must be careful with squad rebuild at Old Trafford

Football Insider verdict

Amorim is already under pressure at Man United, despite only joining from Sporting CP in November, having won just 16 of his 40 games in charge and taking his team to 16th in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a goalkeeper who can use his feet just as well as his hands, much like Liverpool’s Alisson or Man City’s Ederson, and Onana has shown the ability to do exactly that.

However, with the 29-year-old’s confidence at an all-time low at Old Trafford, the short-term answer could be to sell, reinvest for the next couple of years, while building up young talent.

Amorim can use the upcoming summer transfer window to rebuild the current squad, adapting it to fit his current playing style, and Martinez would certainly fit the bill for a ball-playing goalkeeper.

Of course, given the cost-cutting techniques from Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently, the Red Devils need to be careful with their spending, and they cannot afford to make another mistake between the sticks.
