Andre Onana shares Man United image after Bruno Fernandes confession

Man United star Andre Onana has posted an image celebrating their 2-1 Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen on Thursday after Bruno Fernandes backed the goalkeeper (December 12).

The 28-year-old goalkeeper was at fault for former Burnley striker Matej Vydra’s opener, attempting to play the ball to Matthijs de Ligt despite the defender being surrounded by three opposition players.

Rasmus Hojliund was on hand to bail Onana out, scoring a brace to secure the win and send Man United into the top eight of the new Europa League league phase, meaning they would avoid a potentially tricky play-off if they maintain their position.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, captain Fernandes reiterated the squad’s faith in Onana, saying: “We want to play from the back and everyone knows that, then we have to make the right decision on the pitch. Andre thought that Matta [de Ligt] could get on the ball but he missed it and they scored a goal.

“It is not about Andre making the mistake, we don’t look at individuals here when something happens on the wrong side. We have huge belief in him. He knows he made a mistake because he is a clever guy, he is going to help us many times and we trust his qualities on the ball.

“Mistakes are part of football. If they don’t happen then goals don’t happen. But we did well to show the resilience to come back and find the victory.”

Andre Onana retains faith of Man United squad despite poor run of form

Onana was arguably responsible for two of Nottingham Forest’s goals in Man United’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Nuno Espirito Santo’s high-flying side.

The Cameroon international failed to stop Morgan Gibbs-White’s shot, despite it being straight at him, and did not attempt to jump for Chris Wood’s looping header.

Onana is United’s undisputed number one, starting all 22 of his appearances across all competitions, conceding 27 goals, and keeping seven clean sheets in 1980 minutes of action.

The Man United ‘keeper took to Instagram after the victory over Viktoria Plzen, sharing an image of him and his fellow teammates celebrating.

United fell to 13th in the Premier League table after the defeat to Forest with five wins, four draws, and six defeats from their 15 games.

Ruben Amorim’s side face arch-rivals Man City in the second and arguably most important Manchester derby of the season on Sunday (December 15) with both sides in desperate need of a win.
