‘Andre Onana taunts Lyon supporters’ after ‘massive’ Man United moment
Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana has sent another response to Lyon supporters amid his ongoing rivalry with the French sides.
The two clubs are currently facing off in the quarter finals of the Europa League, which is the last hope of silverware or European qualification for Ruben Amorim‘s side this season.
Ahead of the first leg, Onana had become embroiled in a war of words with Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic, who is of course former Red Devils player.
That initially backfired for the goalkeeper though, with Onana at fault for both goals Man United conceded in a 2-2 draw during the first leg of the tie.
He was then dropped for his side’s Premier League game at the weekend, though replacement Altay Bayindir faired little better in a 4-1 thrashing by Newcastle United.
But as the second leg got underway at Old Trafford on Thursday night (17 April), the Cameroon international was quickly given the chance to fire back at those connected with the opposition.

Andre Onana enjoys Manuel Ugarte opener
Amorim’s side made the perfect start to that second leg of the tie, going in front with just ten minutes on the clock.
A brilliant Man United move ended with Alejandro Garnacho squaring for Manuel Ugarte to roll the ball into the back of the Lyon from inside the penalty area.
With Onana spending the first half occupying the penalty area closest to the corner of the ground where the Lyon fans are housed, the goalkeeper was keen to add insult to injury of the goal with those fans.
Describing the opening goal from Man United while commentating on the game for TNT Sports, commentator Darren Fletcher (8:10pm): “That’s a massive goal for Manchester United scored by Manuel Ugarte who doesn’t for them by any stretch of the imagination.
“The goal was put together quite brilliantly and Onana runs straight across to the Lyon supporters to celebrate in front of them, it’s the perfect start for Manchester United and they have the lead after ten minutes at Old Trafford.”
Man United take a big step towards keeping their season alive
Football Insider Verdict
Having been knocked out of both cups and with a dismal run in the Premier League, the Europa League is now the Red Devils’ only hope of success this season.
As a result there will have been plenty on Man United to get a positive result going into this second leg at Old Trafford.
It was though an excellent start for Amorim’s side with this goal, which was expertly worked, before a second from Diogo Dalot on the stroke of half time put them well in control.
After the scrutiny he has been under in the past week, it is no surprise Onana made the most of this goal either, and he will have wanted to make a point to the Lyon fans after the stick the club have given him.
It is worth noting that he also backed up those actions on the pitch, making some very good saves to keep Man United ahead in the first half of this game.
With that in mind, the club will desperately hope that Onana is now starting to rediscover his confidence, given how important an in-form goalkeeper is for them.
