Andrey Santos ‘outgrown’ Strasbourg: Major Chelsea update after Amougou deal
Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos could be in line for a new move in the summer transfer window following his loan spell with Strasbourg, as per BBC Sport.
Santos is yet to make his debut for the Premier League club, after moving to Stamford Bridge in January 2023.
The midfielder then joined Strasbourg on loan in February 2024, after temporary stints with his former club Vasco da Gama, and Nottingham Forest.
Last summer saw the 20-year-old extend his loan with the French side, who are part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea, until the end of this season.
Santos has been in excellent form for Strasbourg during the current campaign, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in 20 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
According to this latest BBC update, that form has led to a belief that the midfielder has now “outgrown” Liam Rosenior’s side, who are currently ninth in the French top-flight.
As a result Santos is apparently due to return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, although other clubs are said to be increasingly interested in signing him on a permanent basis.
In turn, fellow midfielder Mathis Amougou, who Chelsea signed on the final day of this winter transfer window is expected to be loaned out to Strasbourg himself when the market reopens in the summer.
Chelsea should not sell Andrey Santos this summer
Football Insider Verdict
Those at Stamford Bridge are yet to actually see Santos in action for their first-team in what is now two years since he made his move to the club.
It would therefore feel like a risk for Chelsea to sell the midfielder without first giving him the chance to show what he can do for Maresca’s side.
Indeed his performances for Strasbourg this season certainly suggest they may have an asset on their hands, so it would make sense to use him.
There are still over five years remaining on his contract with his parent club as well, so they should be under no pressure to sell in the summer.

Chelsea have also found themselves short in midfield at times this season, with the absence of the likes of Romeo Lavia through injury limiting their depth in the centre of the park.
Keeping Santos around would help deal with that issue if it arises again next season, especially if Amougou does head to Strasbourg.
It would therefore seem strange to see him sold in the summer even if the interest in doing so does indeed emerge.
