Andy Hinchliffe in awe of ‘magnificent’ Gustavo Hamer moment in Sheffield United win vs Sheffield Wednesday

Gustavo Hamer was heavily involved in Sheffield United’s 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

The Blades ran riot in the first half against their bitter rivals at Bramall Lane, as they secured three points, while consigning their neighbours to relegation to League One in the process.

Early goals from Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows were enough to secure the victory for Chris Wilder’s men, despite the visitors cutting the lead through Charlie McNeill in the 53rd minute.

Kalvin Phillips and Gabriel Otegbayo were also shown red cards, as both sides ended a typically fiery derby with just 10 men on the pitch.

Hamer has been hugely influential for Sheffield United once again this season, and he was at the heart of one of the game’s biggest moments on Sunday.

Gustavo Hamer wows Andy Hinchliffe with impressive assist

United quickly put paid to any hopes of a derby day upset on Sunday, as Bamford swiftly put them ahead in just the second minute of the encounter.

The former Leeds United striker slotted a cool finish past Wednesday goalkeeper Seny Dieng with the first effort of the game, but Andy Hinchliffe was quick to acknowledge the piece of quality that created the goal.

Hamer pounced on a poor clearance from Wednesday youngster Joel Ndala, before reversing an excellent pass to create the opening for his teammate.

It was a moment that Hinchliffe, a former Wednesday hero, couldn’t praise quickly enough during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game.

“It’s a poor forward ball from Ndala, he gives it away cheaply,” the 57-year-old said.

“There’s such a clever pass in here from Hamer, he could have gone for glory and tried to be the hero by having a shot himself. He sees where Bamford is, and he just checks the ball out to his left, it’s a magnificent pass.

“The movement from Bamford is excellent as well, he stays onside, and he just waits for Dieng to make it clear what he’s going to do, and he just passes it past him.”

Hamer assist to reignite Premier League interest

Football Insider revealed back in December that Hamer could push to leave United if they fail to achieve promotion at the end of the season, and that looks a distant possibility despite their derby success.

The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in several of the recent transfer windows, as interest from Leeds United has risen on several occasions.

His assist for Bamford’s opener on Sunday served as yet another reminder of the quality that he provides, and it will surely prompt eyes to train back on him once again, given that it was produced on such a big stage.

The midfielder has consistently been one of the Championship’s best players in recent years, and it is surely only a matter of time before he is playing top-flight football once again, whether that is with or without United.

Wilder and Co. will undoubtedly be reluctant to lose him once again this summer, but it may ultimately be a situation that is taken out of their control.
