Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, and could finally make his long-awaited return to Celtic.

The Scotland international was a part of the Celtic academy as a boy, but left to join Queen’s Park in 2009, before eventually moving to Dundee United.

From there, Robertson joined Hull City and later Liverpool in 2017, where he has gone on to win the Premier League twice and the Champions League in a legendary career.

The 32-year-old has previously admitted his love for his boyhood club, and his desire to one day pull on the green and white at Celtic Park.

Celtic transfer chiefs will undoubtedly be looking at ways to make it happen this summer, although competition is expected to be fierce.

Andy Robertson ‘dreamed’ of Celtic move

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Robertson is a Celtic target this summer, with decision-makers keen to make the move happen.

The 32-year-old will undoubtedly have more lucrative offers and will certainly need to take a pay cut, but the emotional element may well see the move come to fruition.

Despite losing his spot in the Liverpool team to new signing Milos Kerkez, Robertson has continued to play a prominent part this season.

He has made 31 appearances across all competitions and remains injury-free, despite his career appearances now standing at almost 450 games.

It is clear that the Scotland captain still has energy in his legs, and a move to Celtic could be just the thing to spark a final boost.

“Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it,” Robertson told the Currie Club podcast in 2022. “When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park… as a fan you always have that dream.

“Ideally I want to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game, at the top of the tree my whole career, that’s the route I want to go down.

“But also, when I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.

“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment. I don’t look too far ahead and I don’t often look back. There will be a time for that.”

What would Robertson arrival mean for Kieran Tierney?

Kieran Tierney made a similar move last summer when he left Arsenal on a free transfer to return to his beloved Celtic.

The defender has been superb since making the switch, scoring five goals and providing 11 assists in 45 games across all competitions.

Robertson would likely be signed for the same position, however, and it would seem senseless to rotate a pair of such pedigree.

Celtic’s next manager could replicate how Steve Clarke utilises both players, starting Tierney as a left-sided centre-back in a back-three and Robertson as a left-wing-back.

Alternatively, one of the two could well be deployed as a right-back, if necessary. Regardless, Celtic will have to weigh up the finances involved before making any decision.
