Ange Postecoglou has ‘persecution complex’ at Tottenham: ‘It’s his own fault’

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been accused of having a “persecution complex” after another spat with the media.

Following a strong first season in North London the walls seem to be closing in on the Australian boss as his side stumble to the finish line.

Sitting 14th in the Premier League and facing a second-leg away at Eintracht Frankfurt with the scores tied at 1-1, Postecoglou faces a near impossible task making a success of this season.

Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva have been touted as potential replacements for the ex-Celtic boss, who has endured a testy relationship with the media during his time in England.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan analysed another difficult press conference for the Tottenham manager prior to the European clash.

Ange Postecoglou at fault for difficult relationship with media

Postecoglou had been asked two questions by members of the media, the first related to Arsenal fans mocking Tottenham during their 3-0 win over Real Madrid on Tuesday (8 April), whilst the second was in relation to Brennan Johnson being denied a hat-trick after Mathys Tel was preferred as the penalty kick taker in the 3-1 win over Southampton.

Host Jim White posed to Jordan there was “kind of no end to this”, with the former Crystal Palace chairman responding bluntly: “Well it’s his own fault.”

White then stated: “Well if Ange pokes the media, he’s gonna get poked back.”

Jordan repeats himself: “Well it’s his own fault, he’s got a persecution complex.

“I think the first question is facetious and something I would say is not clever. That question’s not necessary. It’s not necessary, it’s not a relevant question. It has nothing to do with the game.

“He can’t control what Arsenal fans sing and don’t sing, it’s just a question to get a reaction.

“The next question, though, is a topical subject, you know when people take penalties and players argue on the field and there’s controversy, you’re gonna get asked about it.

“And it’s got nothing to do with turning gold into [expletive]”, after Postecoglou had claimed this is what the media was doing over the penalty-taker argument.

Ange Postecoglou learns that results trump all else

Football Insider Verdict

Last season, Postecoglou was routinely praised and seen as a breath of fresh air, thanks to his cheeky and dry sense of humour, whilst also being unafraid of voicing how he really felt about any number of topics.

Things were going well, Spurs were unfortunate not to qualify for the Champions League, but the Australian did so without star-man Harry Kane.

Postecoglou was seen as a manager Tottenham could build around long-term. But how times change, how results change.

This season, that cheeky dry-wittedness has been replaced with a sombre, moody, almost resentful persona. Where previously sparring with the media was fun and light-hearted, now it is tense and unpleasant.

The injury bug that has hit Spurs has exacerbated the issue, but fundamentally, the magic is gone, and so has Postecoglou’s charm.

It would be surprising to see Tottenham retain his services next year, but Postecoglou has proven himself to be a capable manager and he will undoubtedly be given more chances to prove himself at the highest level.
