Ange Postecoglou sack: ‘Two internal replacement candidates named at Tottenham’

Tottenham have two internal candidates to potentially replace Ange Postecoglou if he is sacked as manager, The Guardian Reports.

Should chairman Daniel Levy fire the Australian, Matt Wells, the senior assistant coach, and Ryan Mason, the assistant, have been identified as internal options who can take over immediately.

Mason, who has twice acted as interim manager, and Wells, are being considered as there are few viable external options available.

Despite the considerations, Levy hopes that Postecoglou can find a way through the club’s current problems, and there are hopes that the return of key players from injuries can have a positive impact on results.

This news comes as Pete O’Rourke exclusively told Football Insider that Postecoglou remains safe for now, despite a 2-1 loss to Leicester on Sunday (26 January).

Bournemouth boss, Andoni Iraola, is currently the favourite to take over from the Australian if he cannot turn results around.

Tottenham have a coaching prodigy in their ranks in Ryan Mason

Football Insider Verdict

In January 2017, Tottenham assistant, Mason, suffered a sickening skull fracture against Chelsea that would curtail his playing career.

At 26-years-old, and having become Hull City’s record transfer just six months before, Mason was forced to retire from playing.

A little over a year later, Mason re-joined his boyhood club, this time as a youth coach.

Mason proved himself to be immensely capable in a coaching and development role, becoming the team’s official academy coach for the U19 UEFA Youth League in July 2019, and then head of player development for U17 to U23 players at the North London club in August 2020.

Having shot up the junior coaching ranks, Mason would be put in the unenviable position of filling Jose Mourinho’s shoes, being name interim coach for the rest of the 2020/21 season in April.

Wolves
Ryan Mason took over from Jose Mourinho when the Portuguese manager left Tottenham.

His second match as a senior head coach, was the EFL Cup final against Man City, which he lost 1-0, an admirable performance in the circumstances.

Mason would reprise his role as interim head coach, after Antonio Conte suffered health issues in 2023.

Following those two stints, Mason began to garner interest from the football world at large, and last summer was linked with a move to Anderlecht [The Guardian]. Despite the move not happening, Mason is viewed as a supremely talented coach, and it would come as no surprise if he does get the opportunity to become manager at a Premier League club soon.
