Angel Gomes: Top club ‘weighing up offer’ for Man United product – Insider

Man United product Angel Gomes’ performances for the England national team have inspired interest from multiple Premier League clubs.

Mick Brown, a former chief scout at Man United where he spent over a decade during their most successful period and who remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that a number of clubs are keeping tabs on his progress.

Gomes, 24, has less than a year remaining on his current contract with French Ligue 1 outfit Lille, and is said to be eyeing a return to England.

He earned his first senior cap during Lee Carsley’s first game as interim boss against the Republic of Ireland, and his first start against Finland at Wembley.

In the most recent international break, the midfielder picked up an assist and shone in a 3-1 win against Finland in Helsinki, with clubs now convinced he could improve their sides.

Those performances for his country, as well as his contract situation, are said to have inspired plenty of interest from clubs looking to bring him back to the Premier League.

Gomes left Man United upon the expiry of his contract in 2020 and has since established himself as a key player for Lille, featuring 123 times for the club.

England star Angel Gomes attracting Premier League interest after contract twist

Brown previously revealed to Football Insider that Tottenham were not one of the clubs in the running for the midfielder despite links with a move to North London.

However, the former scout, who also spent time at Aston Villa, West Ham and Tottenham as well as a number of other clubs and has a wealth of experience in player recruitment, insisted that there are clubs keeping a close eye on his development.

I’ve been told there are Premier League clubs watching him,” he told Football Insider.

“And I think they’d be silly not to be considering a deal.

“Someone playing for England, and if you look at his stats, the amount of times he touches the ball and retains possession, is always going to attract interest.

“His assist against Finland was a beautiful pass. Not many players could have seen that ball, never mind being able to pull it off.

“His skill is undeniable, there have just been questions about whether his physicality would suit the English game, but playing for England has shown that it can.

“It tells you something about his temperament as well that he could take leaving Man United, go abroad, make a name for himself and get in the England team.

“I know there are a lot of clubs looking at him and weighing up an offer.

“His availability on a free puts him in a different conversation in terms of interest. Anybody who’s looking for that type of player will be all over it.”
