‘Angry and disappointed’ – Yoane Wissa takes drastic action to force Newcastle deal

Yoane Wissa appears to be going to great lengths in a bid to try and force through a move to Newcastle United this summer.

Wissa is a striker in demand after registering totals of 12 and 19 goals in the Premier League across the last two seasons, respectively.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are among the teams heavily linked with the DR Congo international.

However, a deal may be hard to strike. Although Wissa has just one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford are very reluctant to sell, having already lost top scorer Bryan Mbeumo, captain Christian Norgaard and manager Thomas Frank this summer.

‘Angry’ Wissa to train alone at Brentford

While Brentford want to keep hold of Wissa, the player himself is pushing hard to make a move to Newcastle United happen.

The 28-year-old is expected to return to training with the Bees on Thursday, but Sky Sports have reported (30 July) that while the player will report for duty, he has ‘no intention’ of training with the first team squad.

It’s understood that Wissa is ‘angry and disappointed’ with Brentford’s approach over his future, effectively scuppering his chance to play Premier League football next season.

Brentford have already turned down a £25million bid for their striker this summer, and Newcastle are now exploring other options — though Wissa himself has not given up hope of a move taking place.

Newcastle still ‘expected’ to sign Wissa

It’s already been a frustrating summer for Newcastle, who have missed out on the signings of Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford, while still facing the very real prospect of losing star man Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

With that in mind, Eddie Howe cannot wait around, and Benjamin Sesko is one player they’re looking at to bolster their forward line.

However, a move for Wissa is not dead in the water just yet.

In fact, former Premier League scout Mick Brown still expects the Magpies to get over the line in their push for the former Lorient forward thanks to the player’s strong stance regarding his future.

I expect they’ll reach an agreement at some stage,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s made it clear he wants to leave, he’s told Brentford that, and he’s refusing to train, so Brentford have to decide whether they want an unhappy player at the club.

“In most cases, in that situation, the club decides they’ll have to let him go.

“So then it’s a case of getting the best deal and the most amount of money they can get for him.

“I think Bryan Mbeumo played it perfectly, because if that move didn’t happen, he could’ve stayed at Brentford without any issues with the club or the fans.

“Wissa hasn’t done that, he’s burnt his bridges and made it a difficult situation.

“At the moment, Newcastle don’t want to pay what Brentford are asking for.

“I think that price tag is going to come down later in the window, and Newcastle might have to go up a little bit so they can meet in the middle.

“So at this stage, there’s no agreement, but him forcing the move makes a huge difference.

“Now it’ll be in Newcastle’s hands because it’s about how much they’re willing to pay.”
