Anthony Gordon ban verdict issued as Newcastle United make decision
Anthony Gordon will be suspended for the League Cup final against Liverpool later this month after being sent off in the defeat against Brighton on Sunday (2 March).
The winger clashed with Jan Paul van Hecke off the ball and was dismissed in the latter stages of the FA Cup clash – which the Magpies went on to lose in extra time.
Newcastle fans admitted they lost respect for Gordon after the incident as supporters felt the clash was uncalled for.
Eddie Howe said post-match that Newcastle would not hesitate to appeal the red card if they felt it was right, but have decided against taking the risk – as frivolous appeals are punished with a further one-game ban.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on whether the Magpies should have lodged an appeal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Gordon’s dismissal was a “pretty clear red card” and would not have been overturned.
He will miss games against West Ham and Brentford in the Premier League, as well as the League Cup final at Wembley.
Gordon’s only other career red came last season when Newcastle faced the Irons in top-flight action.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think an appeal was worth the risk.
“It was a pretty clear red card. There were no punches thrown as such, it was a push – but still, it’s enough for it not to be overturned.
“There is a risk in doing it.
“They’re just going to have to accept this and let it go.
“I’m afraid that’s just the way it goes in football, they’re just going to have to do without Anthony Gordon.”
‘Newcastle brace for Livramento exit’

Newcastle could be forced to sell Livramento given their alarming financial situation and Profit and Sustainability Rules concerns.
Man City are prioritising the signing of a right-back this summer after Kyle Walker left to join AC Milan in January and no longer has a future at the Etihad.
