Anthony Gordon has eye on Everton transfer as big-money announcement close – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Anthony Gordon’s new contract should include a “buy-out clause” to allow him to leave Everton when a bigger side comes calling.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old’s new deal will mean “very little” if the Toffees are still flirting with relegation at the start of next season.

According to The Telegraph (19 December), Gordon is close to signing a new “long-term” contract at Everton to stave off interest from Chelsea and Tottenham.

The report claims the Toffees are in the process of finalising the agreement and hope to make an announcement soon.

Gordon, who is currently under contract until 2025, has scored three goals in 15 appearances this term with Everton struggling for form.

The England Under-21 star has played across the front three for Frank Lampard’s low-scoring side, who sit just one point above the drop zone.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I would like to think there is a buyout clause in there.

“That would cover his back and allow him to get that move a lot easier when teams come calling again.

“Everton could use it to get the fee they want, as well.

“No one’s going to come in during the January window.

“But if Everton are struggling still by the start of next season, this contract is going to mean very little.

“The raise in pay will keep him happy for now, but it’s now down to the player to go out and put in the performances which really impress big sides like Chelsea and Tottenham.

“The new contract is good for all parties, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave very soon.”
