Anthony Gordon swap deal: Newcastle ‘leaked bid’, expert reveals
Newcastle United came close to buying Joe Gomez for £40million and sending Anthony Gordon to Liverpool for a “huge fee” in the summer.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Magpies were almost forced into selling the winger purely to avoid a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Gordon has now signed a fresh long-term contract which is widely reported to run until June 2029.
Liverpool were interested in the England international in June as Newcastle faced trouble with avoiding a £105million loss across three years.
However, they struck a deal with Nottingham Forest to swap Elliot Anderson for goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and record a big book profit.
Gordon has hit two goals in 10 appearances across all competitions this season.
Newcastle almost swapped Gordon for Joe Gomez, says Borson
Borson told Football Insider: “Newcastle have to keep their best players.
“A lot was said about a potential transfer to Liverpool for Gordon.
“The leaked bid for him was purely around the PSR, 30 June situation.
“It was to the point where Newcastle were actually considering taking Joe Gomez for £40million.
“So it would have been a huge fee for Gordon, offset by that figure for Gomez.
“It was a PSR-specific problem they had, they wouldn’t in any normal event want to sell Gordon.

“They’ve got to keep their best players and go from there.
“Newcastle are going to have to do things slowly and incrementally.”
