‘Anthony Gordon to Liverpool door opens up – I can see it happening’

Anthony Gordon came close to joining Liverpool last summer (2024) and Arne Slot’s side could resume their interest in the Newcastle star in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old briefly lost his place in the Magpies lineup after serving a red card suspension but is now back in the fold for Eddie Howe‘s side.

Gordon, who signed a new contract at St James’ Park in October, has notched nine goals and seven assists in 41 appearances across all competitions this season.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed Newcastle may have already lined up a replacement for the England international.

Grealish could replace Gordon at Newcastle, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed an exit for Gordon could open up a spot for Man City star Jack Grealish – and pump much-needed transfer funds into the Newcastle coffers.

The Magpies have been widely linked with a move for the City winger, who will have two years left to run on his contract next month.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (13 May) that City star Grealish, 29, will seek assurances from manager Pep Guardiola this summer.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The Newcastle fans would love Grealish, but they’ve already got Anthony Gordon on the left.

“It could open up the deal for Gordon to go to Liverpool. That’s often been rumoured.

“We could have a situation where Gordon’s slot opens up and Grealish will fit in.

“It would open up the wages for Newcastle and also put some money in the coffers as well, you’d imagine.

“There are a lot of dominoes to fall in all these deals.”

Newcastle plot three key additions

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (12 May) that Newcastle are planning to back Howe by strengthening his squad in a busy transfer window.

Among their priority targets are the additions of a new centre-back, right-winger and goalkeeper amid concerns about their current options.

Football Insider revealed in February that Newcastle want to sign a right-winger as their top priority despite the performances of Jacob Murphy.
