Antonio Conte backed to pull £60m Anthony Gordon U-turn after Tottenham latest - pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to return for Everton star Anthony Gordon in January after an injury-plagued start to the 2022-23 season.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old would suit Spurs due to his ability to play across the front line.

Football Insider revealed during the summer window (23 August) that Tottenham were readying a last-gasp bid for Gordon after holding preliminary talks with Everton.

The forward ended up remaining at Goodison Park but according to The Sun (5 November), Antonio Conte’s side are ready to bid for the £60m-rated talent with Chelsea no longer interested.

The report claims Gordon, who has netted three goals this term, has discussed a new contract with Everton but no agreement has yet been reached.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2025.

Whelan hinted that the England Under-21 international’s output could spike if he was part of Conte’s lineup.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think you’d get more out of him in a more attacking side.

“Everton don’t use their front three to their strengths.

“When you look at how the injuries to Kulusevski, Richarlison, and Son have hurt Spurs, they might need that bit more backup.

“I think he suits Tottenham because he can play on the left, through the middle, and on the right.

“Conte will have thought they had enough, but he’s probably realised he needs just one more player now that he’s down to the bare bones.

“It could be one of those seasons where injuries take over, especially with the World Cup.

“There’s no doubt Gordon is a quality player with plenty more to come from him.”
