Antonio Conte gives verdict on Tottenham title chances after Chelsea defeat

By Harry Sykes

Antonio Conte claimed Tottenham are genuine title contenders after they beat his Chelsea side 2-0 in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Spurs ensured Chelsea did not set a new Premier League record of 14 consecutive wins as two goals from Dele Alli secured a memorable triumph for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

It was also the north London side’s fifth consecutive league victory following wins against Hull, Burnley, Southampton and Watford.

Chelsea manager Conte expressed his disappointment at his team’s first defeat in the competition since September but paid tribute to Spurs.

“It is a pity to stop this run, but Tottenham is a good team, a really strong team and I think is for sure one of the teams that can fight for the title until the end,” Conte told Sky Sports 1’s live coverage in the immediate aftermath of the match. “They fought for the title last season and they can fight also this year.”

Chelsea had hoped to move clear of previous record holders Arsenal but will have to settle for sharing the 13-game winning sequence.

The result at White Hart Lane means the west Londoners have also lost the opportunity to go eight points clear at the top although they have ended the festive period five ahead of Liverpool in second.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 2-2 at Sunderland on Monday after beating Manchester City and Stoke in the immediate aftermath of Christmas.

Tottenham have leapfrogged Arsenal and Manchester City to climb to third in the table, where they are seven points adrift of their bitter London rivals in first.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs fans will be intrigued by how Thierry Henry responded when asked if he will support Tottenham against Chelsea.
