Antonio Rudiger: Pundit issues ‘huge’ Newcastle transfer claim after critical development

Antonio Rudiger is an A-list star who would bring “real quality and experience” to the “project” at Newcastle, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Magpies supporters would be “so excited” if the 29-year-old made the move to St James’ Park.

Rudiger, who is out of contract at the end of this season, cannot pen new terms at Stamford Bridge due to government sanctions imposed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich last week (10 March).

The Telegraph reported on Tuesday (8 March) the Magpies are ready to join the battle to sign the Germany international when his contract expires.

Rudiger has played 40 times for Chelsea this term, scoring three and assisting four.

Phillips claimed the centre-back, 29, could be part of the Newcastle “project” for five more years.

“He could go on to play until he’s 34 at the top level,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Newcastle and that project could get a good five years out of him.

“I don’t think wages would be a huge issue for them with all the money the owners have.

“He would bring some real quality and experience to Newcastle and that defence – I think the fans would love it and be so excited with that deal.”

Rudiger has won five trophies during his time at Chelsea and was an integral part of the side which won the Champions League last season.

Newcastle sit nine points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place.

In other news, Newcastle have been tipped to seal a “bargain” deal after an “unheard of” update.
