Antony to Newcastle: ‘It could happen’ at the 11th hour
Newcastle will only turn to Man United star Antony as a last resort as they seek to bolster their right wing in the January transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England international Paul Robinson believes the Premier League is ‘too fast’ for the 24-year-old and he ‘doesn’t fit’ Eddie Howe’s style of play at Newcastle
Howe’s side had sought to bring a new right-winger to the club in the summer transfer window but decided to prioritise a deal to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi instead, a deal which ultimately failed.
Newcastle’s only current options on the right wing are Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, and it is understood the club will prioritise this position in January.
Newcastle urged to snub Antony deal
Since joining Man United from Ajax for £82million in 2022, the Brazilian has only scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 86 appearances across all competitions.
Antony’s single goal involvement came in their 7-0 League Cup victory over League One Burnley earlier in the season, scoring a penalty in the 35th minute.
“No, think the Premiership is too quick for him”, Robinson told Football Insider.
“I think the game passes him by, I don’t think he works hard enough, I think he works hard but at the wrong things.
“I think the attackers the other way run off him too easily, I’ve seen it firsthand a couple of times at Man United.
“I want to give him the chance, I want to give him the opportunity but the premiership just seems too quick and too physical for him, it’s very, very different to the Eredivisie.
“In Eddie Howe’s team, the demands that he puts on players, I’m not so sure that Antony would work with the demands that he puts on players.
“You look at the system he plays and what Howe asks of his wide players, you look how hard Almiron works when he does play.
“It’s the same with other wide players, Joelinton for example, up and down the touchline, and I just don’t think that he fits into an Eddie Howe system.

“That’s an end-of-window move, if Almiron leaves and they haven’t got anybody else to come January 31st at 10 o’clock, you could maybe see that happening.
“But other than that, I can’t see that happening in all honesty.”
