‘Appalling’, ‘What on earth?’ – Leeds fans stunned as bust-up footage emerges from 2-1 win v Preston
Leeds United fans were baffled that Patrick Bamford was given a yellow card following a bust-up in their victory against Preston North End on Sunday afternoon (21 January).
The Whites snatched a late winner after Joel Piroe converted a 94th-minute penalty to make it 2-1 at Elland Road, but the clash became very heated 10 minutes prior when both sides were chasing the win.
The latest Sky Sports footage showed Preston midfielder Ryan Ledson hack down Ilia Gruev as he was springing a counter-attack, which riled up the Leeds players who quickly surrounded referee David Webb.
A bust-up between both sets of players followed, which saw Georginio Rutter go to the ground amid the tense encounter.
However, the only players who ended up in Webb’s book were Ledson and Bamford, which left a huge number of Leeds supporters confused considering the feisty altercations just moments before.
It was later confirmed that the striker was booked for waving a fake yellow card at the referee, but fans remained bewildered by the “terrible” officiating on display.
They have taken to social media in reaction to his decision, and many feel it was unfair that Bamford was the only player involved in the bust-up to be cautioned.
