Archer and Aston Villa teen could get 'run of starts' after 'fantastic' Gerrard reveal - Agbonlahor

Carney Chukwuemeka and Cameron Archer could benefit massively from Steven Gerrard’s arrival at Aston Villa.

That is the view of Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as Gerrard hinted he will be happy to utilise the club’s academy.

As quoted by Birmingham Live at his unveiling today (November 18), the new Villa boss hailed the “fantastic” academy and promised young players will be given an opportunity if they are good enough.

A club source told Football Insider yesterday (November 17) the squad are “genuinely excited” to be working under the 41-year-old after his first sessions.

And Agbonlahor has suggested Chukwuemeka, 18, and Archer could be two beneficiaries of his methods.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Steven Gerrard will have three or four days to train with the players that have not been away on international duty,”

“He’ll already have an idea about Chukwuemeka, other players like Archer. He’ll know if they are good enough to be still around the first team, he’ll be a good judge.

“Especially Chukwuemeka with the position he plays. They both play in midfield.

“He will want young players in his team and I think Steven Gerrard will be the sort of manager who thinks if you’re good enough, it doesn’t matter about your age. They could get a run of starts.

“It’s a fresh start for everyone. He’s got the licence now to keep changing the team. If he picks a team against Brighton and it’s not working, he’ll change it at half-time, he’ll change it for the game afterwards and the game after.

“If you’re new into a managerial role nobody will judge you for changing a team when it’s not working.”
